Help & Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about buying, selling, accounts, payments and delivery on Lacuna.
Buying art
5 questions+−How do I buy an artwork?
+−Are the works original?
Most works on Lacuna are unique originals; where an item is a limited edition or print, the listing says so and states the edition size. Every Seller warrants that their work is authentic and correctly attributed. See Terms of Sale — Authenticity for details.
+−Can I reserve a piece before deciding?
Adding a work to your cart does not reserve it. Because originals are one-of-a-kind, a piece stays available to everyone until an order is confirmed and paid. If a work is sold, you can follow the artist to be notified when similar pieces are listed.
+−How do I know the condition and size?
Each listing shows the medium, dimensions, year and a condition note supplied by the Seller. Colours on screen may vary slightly from the original. If you need extra photographs or a condition report, message the Seller from the artwork page before ordering.
+−Can I commission a custom work?
Many artists accept commissions. Open the artist’s profile and use the message button to discuss your idea, budget and timeline. Commissioned works are made to order and are generally non-returnable — see our returns policy.
For artists
4 questions+−How do I sell my art on Lacuna?
Create an artist account from the artist registration page, set up your public profile, and upload your works with titles, dimensions, medium and prices. Once approved, your pieces appear in the marketplace and in search.
+−What commission does Lacuna charge?
We charge a single, all-inclusive commission on each final sale price — 15% for individual artists and 30% for galleries. The same flat rate applies whatever the sale price, and there are no listing or monthly fees. See Selling & Pricing for the full breakdown and an earnings calculator; the exact rate for your account is shown in your Seller agreement and dashboard.
+−When and how do I get paid?
After a sale is confirmed and delivery is complete, and once the cancellation window has closed, your net proceeds are remitted to your registered payout account within the period stated in your Seller agreement. You can track every sale and payout in your artist dashboard.
+−Who keeps the copyright to my work?
You do. Copyright stays with you as the artist. By listing, you grant Lacuna a licence to display and promote your work on the Platform. Full details are in the Terms of Use.
For galleries
4 questions+−How can my gallery list its artists?
Register through gallery registration to create a gallery profile. From your gallery dashboard you can add represented artists, manage inventory and publish exhibitions.
+−Can I promote exhibitions on Lacuna?
Yes. Published exhibitions appear on the Exhibitions page and on your gallery profile, with dates, featured works and visiting information.
+−How are gallery sales settled?
Gallery sales follow the same commission and remittance model as artist sales. Settlement details, including split arrangements with represented artists, are configured in your gallery dashboard and Seller agreement.
+−What happens if a represented artist goes independent?
The artist’s profile and copyright are always theirs, so leaving removes the gallery as representative rather than taking anything away. Future sales then go direct to the artist, while the gallery keeps its share on past sales and on consignment or gallery-introduced sales for a limited tail period. See Representation & independence for the full breakdown.
Account & profile
3 questions+−Do I need an account to browse?
You can browse and search freely. An account is needed to buy, sell, follow artists, send messages or join the VIP programme. Register here — it’s free.
+−I forgot my password — what now?
Use the “forgot password” link on the sign-in screen and follow the email instructions to reset it. For your security, keep your password private and tell us at once if you suspect any unauthorised access.
+−How do I update or close my account?
Manage your details from your account page. You can close your account at any time; some records may be retained where required by law or to complete open transactions.
Payments & currency
3 questions+−Which currency are prices in?
Prices are set in US Dollars (USD, $). You can switch the display currency using the selector at the top of every page to see an indicative conversion, but the USD price is the amount you pay unless stated otherwise at checkout.
+−What payment methods can I use?
The methods available to you are shown at checkout and are handled by our secure third-party payment providers. High-value orders may require additional identity verification before they are released.
+−Is my payment protected?
Yes. We may hold funds until the work is dispatched or delivery is confirmed, and we run fraud and security checks on orders. See Terms of Sale — Payment and Buyer protection.
Shipping & returns
4 questions+−How long does delivery take?
Estimated dispatch and delivery times appear on each listing and in your order confirmation. Large or fragile works may need custom crating and a separate delivery quote, which we confirm before dispatch.
+−Do you ship internationally?
Many Sellers ship worldwide using specialist fine-art carriers. Available destinations and shipping costs are shown at checkout. Some works may be subject to export rules that can affect delivery.
+−My artwork arrived damaged. What do I do?
Report visible damage to us within 48 hours of delivery and keep all packaging for inspection. We’ll work with you and the Seller on a repair, replacement or refund. See Buyer protection.
+−Can I return a piece if I change my mind?
In most cases you may return an Artwork within 14 days of delivery, provided it is unused, undamaged and in its original packaging. Commissioned and certain VIP or private-sale works are non-returnable. Full conditions are in the returns policy.
VIP & private sales
2 questions+−What is the VIP programme?
VIP gives collectors early or exclusive access to selected works and private sales, sometimes with bespoke terms such as viewings, reserves or instalments. Learn more on the VIP page.
+−How do private sales differ?
Private and VIP sales may carry additional terms — including confidentiality and special payment arrangements — which are provided before the sale is concluded and take precedence for that transaction. See Terms of Sale — Private & VIP sales.
